KUNG FU TRAINING
Our fundamental kung fu training regimen is designed to meet the demands of both beginners and advanced students. For beginners, the techniques one acquires in basic training lay the foundation for higher levels of performance. For intermediate and advanced students, basic training classes are essential for maintaining and fine-tuning skill-sets. Fundamental kung training is an essential part of lion dance training.
KUNG FU FUNDAMETALS TRAINING
Kung Fu Stances:
- Static Stances (Ma)
- 11 Fundamental Stances
- Horse, Triangle, Dragon, Shifted, Cross (forward & reverse), Cat, Crane, Lotus, Crouching, Single Blade
- Dynamic Stances (Ma)
- Twisting – Horse Stance to Triangle Stance
Kung Fu Hand/Arm Techniques:
- Strikes (Choy) – Abdomen, Torso, & Head Targeted
- Basic Punch, Pau, Kup, Bing, Bang, Ben, 3 Chaps (Ping, Yang, & Yin), Gua, Deng, Den, Lam, Ka, Peck, Fu Jow, etc., & Variants

Partner-Work:
- Application of Level I Hand/Arm Striking & Blocking Techniques Stretching / Limbering:

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED
In order to attend intermediate and/or advanced classes a student is required to learn the 6 beginner form routines listed above in beginner training and demonstrate competence in basic techniques and their application.
Once at the intermediate and/or advanced level, training branches into the following areas.
Intermediate & Advanced Hand Forms:
- Luk Dim Poon (Six-and-a-Half Fist)
- Siu Moi Fa Kuen (Small Plum Flower Fist)
- Dat Mo Kuen (Bodhidharma Fist)
- And more…
Weapons Forms:
- Gwan sut (cudgel)
- Do sut (broadsword)
- Gim sut (sword)
- Cheung sut (spear)
- Dai Do (halbard)

Self-Defence Techniques:
– Intensive application training for all intermediate and advanced students
SanShou:
– There are also optional classes for advanced students interested in competition sparring
Grading System
At Hong Luck Kung Fu Club, we use a four-tier grading system. However, our students are not required to wear belts, sashes, or any other visible markers meant to discern their rank.
The main reason for this is that visible markers of rank are not consistent with Chinese tradition.
In graduation ceremonies, however, students will be presented with a certificate and headband indicating their level of achievement.
Level I – 18 Enlightened Disciples of Buddha (Sap Bat Lawhon)
Level II – Four Diamond Guards (Sei Dai Gum Gong)
Level III – 5 Traveling Practitioners of the Way (Ng Hang Dosi)
Level IV – Red sash
Testing
Testing for all levels takes place twice a year:
– The first 2 weeks of February (preceding Chinese New Year)
– The first 2 weeks of August (preceding Hong Luck’s Anniversary)
A brief note on Standardization
Unlike other fighting systems, the Chinese martial arts, historically speaking, have never had a set of standardized regulations to judge the ability of its practitioners.
The main reason for this is that with so many diverse styles found throughout different parts of China, it has been difficult to find uniform criteria upon which to build a grading system.
